Here at Vey’s Powersports, we want our customers to be as safe as possible. There are numerous potential risks associated with riding a motorcycle. Luckily, many of these risks can be eliminated or greatly reduced by simply performing a pre-ride check on your bike. Simply follow our advice, and you’ll be well on your way to enjoying a safe motorcycle ride.

Tires

Basic motorcycle tire maintenance starts with measuring the air pressure. Make sure that the PSI falls within the manufacturer's set range. You should also take a look at the treads. Uneven or excessive tread wear means that you have a problem. You should also examine the tire wall for gashes, scalping, or cracking. Finally, remove any foreign debris that has become lodged into the treads.

Brakes, Throttle, & Clutch

Start by inspecting the discs on your brakes to ensure that they are shiny and clear. The best way to check that your brakes are working properly is by taking a ride, though obviously, you should take it very slow for safety reasons. If you feel or hear anything unusual, that can indicate a problem. You should also take this opportunity to check that the throttle is closing completely. Finally, check your clutch. If you cannot change gears smoothly, there is a problem.

Sprockets & Chains

Another important maintenance task is ensuring that your chains, cables, nuts, and bolts are all properly tightened. If you are struggling with this, a mechanic will be able to help. While you are doing this, you can also lubricate your bike’s drivetrain, though remember to clean it first and to avoid over-lubricating the drivetrain.

Coolant & Brake Fluid

Before your ride, check that your coolant and brake fluid levels are topped off. The radiator cap should be sealed tightly, with no visible cracks or leaks.

Lights

Even if you are riding during the day, you may unexpectedly need to use your headlights, so be sure to check them before each ride.

Oil

Engine oil plays an important role in keeping your motorcycle running well. To check your oil, remove the dipstick, wipe it off, put it back into the engine, and then remove it again. If your oil is discolored or running low, it is time to replace it.
