ATVs are primarily used for off-roading, so it is hardly a surprise that many of them could use a good wash. Regularly cleaning your ATV is an important part of basic maintenance. Not only does it help to prevent rust and deterioration, but it also keeps dust and debris out of sensitive internal components like the engine. That is why the experts at Vey’s Powersports have created this guide to cleaning your ATV.

Pre-Soak The Mud & Scrape

If your ATV has a lot of caked-on mud, you will need to soak or scrape it off before you go any further. You can use a plastic mud scraper if you are concerned about scratching up your ATV’s finish or paint. If you don’t have a plastic mud scraper, repeatedly hosing down your ATV will usually do the trick.

Pressure Wash Off The Grime

A pressure washer can remove any stubborn grime clinging to the ATV after your initial soak. If you don’t have a pressure washer, a hose and nozzle can work almost as well. However, bear in mind that if you go this route you may have to spend more time removing the dirt by hand scrubbing.

Add Soap & Scrub

Now it is time to scrub every surface on your ATV with a wash mitt or sponge and some bike soap or automotive detergent. Pay particular attention to the plastic parts, seat, frame, and wheels. Use a stiff brush to drag dirt and oil out of the nooks and crannies, and degreaser for any areas that are too oily to deal with normally.

Dry It Off

Either air dry your ATV or use a lint-free towel. If you are worried about rust, an air compressor will make getting into narrow cracks and crevices easier while drying everything off much more quickly.

Polishing

The last step is to spray your ATV with plastic polish and wipe it down. Make sure that you avoid getting any on the seat, as this can make it slippery and lead to an accident on your next ride.
